For the 11th consecutive year, DTC3 will televise the Smithville Fiddler’s Jamboree LIVE, from kickoff through the fiddle off.

The 51st annual Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree and Crafts Festival is coming up Friday and Saturday, July 1-2, on the courthouse square in downtown Smithville. 35 categories of competition will be held over the course of the two-day event, which kicks off Friday morning at 9 a.m. 16 categories will be held on Friday, which include the following:

  1. OLD-TIME APPALACHIAN FOLKSINGING (Solo)
  2. JUNIOR CLOGGING (Ages 13 – 39)
  3. JUNIOR BUCKDANCING (Ages 13 – 39)
  4. OLD-TIME APPALACHIAN FOLKSINGING (Duet, Trio, Quartet)
  5. DOBRO GUITAR
  6. MOUNTAIN DULCIMER
  7. HAMMER DULCIMER
  8. NOVELTY EVENT (Spoon Clacking, Jug Blowing, Washboard, Tub, Saws)
  9. AUTOHARP
  10. GOSPEL SINGING (Solo)
  11. COUNTRY HARMONICA
  12. OLD-TIME BANJO
  13. YOUTH SQUARE DANCING (4 Couples – 8 Total Dancers)
  14. GOSPEL SINGING (Duet, Trio and Quartet)
  15. MANDOLIN
  16. OLD-TIME FIDDLE BAND

Finals for each of Friday’s 16 categories will follow the preliminaries. Also featured on Friday will be a special performance by the Smithville Community Chorus and the festival’s official opening ceremonies at 6:00 p.m.

The competition will resume on Saturday at 9:00 a.m., featuring the following categories:

  1. JUNIOR OLD-TIME APPALACHIAN FLATFOOT DANCE (Ages 0-39)
  2. SENIOR OLD-TIME APPALACHIAN FLATFOOT DANCE (Ages 40 +)
  3. SENIOR BUCKDANCING (Ages 40 +)
  4. SENIOR CLOGGING (Ages 40 +)
  5. BLUEGRASS BANJO
  6. JUNIOR FIDDLERS (Ages 13-39)
  7. FLAT TOP GUITAR
  8. CONTEST FIDDLE (Neil Dudney Award)
  9. BLUEGRASS BAND
  10. SENIOR FIDDLERS (Ages 40 + Over)
  11. SQUARE DANCING (4 Couples – 8 Total Dancers)

In addition to the regular categories of competition on Saturday, there will be seven beginner categories for those ages 12-under, known as the National Championship for Country Musician Beginners. Those categories are as follows:

  1. BEGINNER BUCK DANCING
  2. BEGINNER CLOGGING
  3. BEGINNER DOBRO GUITAR
  4. BEGINNER MANDOLIN
  5. BEGINNER FIVE-STRING BANJO
  6. BEGINNER FLAT TOP GUITAR
  7. BEGINNER FIDDLE

The Beginners’ competition begins after Senior Clogging. The finals in the Beginners’ categories will be held after the preliminaries. In addition to the first, second and third place awards that will be given out, two other special Beginners’ awards will also be handed out. The James G. “Bobo” Driver Award will be given out to the best Beginner Fiddler, while the Nolan Turner Best Overall Entertainer Award is given to the top overall instrumentalist in the five music categories.

Also featured on Saturday is the presentation of the Blue Blaze Award, to the 2022 SPGMA ‘Entertainer of the Year’, The Kody Norris Show, who will perform during the festivities. The presentation and performance will be held at 5:00 p.m on Saturday. In addition to numerous awards, album releases (Rebel Records), The Kody Norris Show has had appearances across the nation including the prestigious Bluegrass Hall of Fame.

The Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree will conclude on Saturday night, with the Grand Championship Fiddle Off, as the Junior and Senior Fiddle champions compete for the Berry C. Williams Memorial Award.

The 2021 DTC Communications Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, September 18, at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds in Alexandria, TN. Members of the cooperative stopped by the event to cast ballots in the Director Election.  If you were unable to attend this year’s meeting, we certainly missed you, but you can view the meeting on DTC3 on the following days:
