Watertown's Deramus Carey Named DTC Communications' Player of the Year

ALEXANDRIA, TN, NOVEMBER 5, 2018: Each season, DTC Sports selects an outstanding player from the DTC service area for the DTC Communications Player of the Year. This year, the honor went to Watertown High School junior running back, Deramus Carey.

Deramus was chosen based on his outstanding performance throughout the 2018 regular season. Through the ten games of the regular season, Deramus has put up head-spinning numbers for the Purple Tiger football program. He has rushed for 1,576 yards on 135 carries – an astounding 11.7 yards per carry – and scored 26 of the Purple Tigers’ 46 rushing touchdowns. In addition, Deramus caught four passes for 59 yards and kicked off the 2018 season with an 81-yard kickoff return for touchdown in the season opener against the Gordonsville Tigers. In total, Deramus has 1,716 all-purpose yards and 27 touchdowns, which makes him responsible for 164 of Watertown’s 479 total points on the season.

Watertown topped Bledsoe County, 57-15, in the first round of the TSSAA Class 2A State Playoffs on Friday, November 2. Watertown will host Westmoreland in Round Two on Friday night, November 9.

In addition to Carey’s individual award, DTC Communications also presented Watertown High School head football coach Gavin Webster, and the Watertown Football Program, a check for $500 for having this year’s DTC Communications Player of the Year. Tom Duggin and Chris Vance of DTC Sports made the presentations to Carey and Coach Webster during Watertown’s playoff game, last Friday night.

“DTC Communications is proud to be a community partner with the local schools in our service area, and we are equally proud to recognize the accomplishments of the outstanding student-athletes within the area,” said Chris Townson, CEO of DTC Communications. “I want to personally congratulate both Deramus Carey and the Watertown Purple Tigers football team for their remarkable accomplishments throughout the 2018 high school football season.”

This year marked the second time a Watertown High School football player had won the DTC Player of the Year award, joining Seth Price in 2016. Past winners include Carson Hackett and Jalen Manning of Smith County, and Lucas Phillips and Steven Jennings (twice) of DeKalb County.
